Travelling on GLP-1 Medications This Summer

1. ⏱️ Stick to Your Schedule

Its best to not skip doses without advice so always check in with your prescriber beforehand if you plan to do this.⚠️ GLP-1 medications cause GI side effects (nausea, vomiting, etc.) — restarting too high after a long gap can make symptoms worse. That’s why guidelines suggest restarting gently if you’ve been off for a while.

2. 🧳Pack Smart: Don’t Let Airport Security Trip You Up

Always carry your GLP-1 medication in hand luggage, not checked baggage. Temperatures in the hold can damage your medication.

Bring pens in their original packaging with the pharmacy label attached.

Carry a GP or prescriber letter listing your medication, dosage, and purpose — most prescribers can provide this.

You're allowed up to 3 months’ supply for personal use.

Yes, you can bring sharps (like injection pens, needles, or pre-filled syringes) in your carry-on. Declare them at security and store them securely.

📌 According to the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), injectable medications and related medical items are permitted in cabin baggage with supporting documents.

3. ❄️ Even on Staycation: Keep It Cool — But Not Frozen

Use an insulated travel case with reusable ice packs to keep unopened pens between 2°C–8°C.

Never let ice packs touch your pen directly — use cloth wraps or barrier sleeves.

Keep your case out of direct sunlight and avoid hot cars, window ledges, or radiators.

4. 🌞 Hot Destinations? Stay Temperature-Aware

Store unopened pens in the fridge at 2–8°C.

Once opened:

Mounjaro: Stable below 30°C for up to 30 days

Wegovy: Stable below 30°C for up to 28 days

Use cooling bags on day trips and check hotel minibars — many can safely store meds (bring a mini thermometer for peace of mind).

💉 You can inject GLP-1s straight from the fridge or at room temperature — some people find it more comfortable one way or the other, so go with what works for you

5. 🛡️ Travel Insurance & GLP-1 Medications

Before you travel, make sure your insurance:

✅ Covers pre-existing conditions

✅ Includes cover for lost or delayed medication

✅ Allows for medical repatriation or emergency care abroad

🛡️ Why You Should Tell Your Travel Insurer About GLP-1 Use

Even if you're using Mounjaro or Wegovy for weight loss alone, insurers often see GLP-1 use as a sign of an underlying medical condition:

Obesity (BMI ≥30)

Type 2 Diabetes or pre-diabetes

PCOS

Thyroid dysfunction

If you've been diagnosed, treated, or prescribed medication for any of these within the past 2 years, you must declare it when applying for insurance.

📌 Failing to do so may:

Invalidate your policy

Block claims for lost medication

Prevent access to emergency treatment or repatriation.

💡 Always declare your GLP-1 use when buying insurance. Not doing so could invalidate your policy.
