The Reality on Cheaper Alternatives

💬 In this week’s Zoom, many of us shared worries about rising costs of Mounjaro® in the UK. It’s the hot topic right now, and everyone wants to know: “Is there going to be a more affordable option?”

Here’s what you need to know:

Near-term: No cheaper like-for-like alternatives are expected to launch in the UK in the next year.New drugs: Several next-generation treatments are in trials and look very effective but they will likely be priced at the same level or higher.NHS access: The most realistic way to cut costs is via the NHS. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®/Zepbound®) has started phased rollout for people who meet eligibility criteria.Private options: Semaglutide (Wegovy®) is still available and can be a lower-cost option than tirzepatide, though average weight loss results are slightly less.

What this means for you?

In the short term (2025–26): There isn’t a cheaper “Mounjaro alternative” coming soon. Best bet: If cost is a barrier, check whether you qualify for NHS treatment, or consider Wegovy® as a private option.Longer term (2026 onwards): More powerful and possibly more convenient drugs (like pills or triple agonists) are on the way but they’re not expected to be cheaper.
